Chevrolet kicked off the South African portion of the One World Futbol Project in Cape Town, during the Manchester United Tour 2012, delivered to the world by DHL.
The donation of these unique soccer balls is part of a global campaign through which Chevrolet as the founding sponsor of the One World Futbol Project, creators of the One World Futbol, will donate 1.5 million of these virtually indestructible footballs to youth in war-stricken zones, refugee camps, disaster areas and other disadvantaged communities around the world.
Numerous local schools were invited to take part in the Manchester United Soccer School where they were put through their paces by head coach Gavin Rhodes and Alan Keegan, the voice of Old Trafford. At the end of the event each school received a donation of three One World Futbols to assist with their soccer programmes. Chevrolet will donate hundreds of One World Futbols to disadvantaged schools in South Africa over the next 12 to 24 months.
“When we announced the Manchester United partnership, Chevrolet’s pledge was to keep football fans at the heart of its football sponsorship activities with a constant focus on bringing club supporters and football fans around the world closer to the game. We saw this pledge become a reality last week with the participation of young school children in the Manchester United Soccer Schools where United players and Cape Town born Club legend Quinton Fortune facilitated a coaching clinic. Through the donation of these balls we hope to keep the football dream alive in South Africa,” said Alastair Ironside GM South Africa General Manager, Marketing.
The One World Futbol Project and ball were inspired by Sting’s song “One World (Not Three).” The development of the ball required 11 months of prototyping and field testing in Africa, Haiti, Iraq and elsewhere. The One World Futbol Project works with organisations and companies all around the world who purchase, sponsor and/or distribute the One World Futbol where it can support lasting play.
