RFS Magalies 200 – VICTORY FOR GOUVEIA AND SON

SECOND VICTORY FOR GOUVEIA AND SON

The Father and son combination of Tony and Michael Gouveia scored their second overall and class win in succession with victory on the RFS Magalies 200, round two of the Northern Region Off Road Championship, at Tarlton on Saturday.

The event was run in conjunction with the opening round of the Absa Off Road Championship with heat, dust and a tough and tricky route taking its toll. The Gouveias, in the Gearbox Specialists BAT, came up with a faultless performance to finish around 10 minutes ahead of veteran former national champion Giel Nel and Johan de Klerk in the Portable Shade Zarco Truggy.

RFS Motorsport in strong start to off road season

The two-car RFS Motorsport team of Christiaan du Plooy/Henk Janse van Vuuren and Hannes Grobler/Hennie ter Stege (RFS BMW X3) survived a tough opening round of the Absa Off Road Car Championship to finish a respectable fourth and sixth respectively in the production vehicle category of the RFS Magalies 400 near Magaliesburg on Saturday.

Anthony Taylor served his apprenticeship in motor sport car preparation under his father, Roger, a well known personality in both local and international motor racing. With an exposure to motor sport from an early age it was natural that he should develop an active interest in the sport both in terms of vehicle preparation and as a competitor.

While he enjoyed a high level of support from his family, Anthony was always encouraged to be self-sufficient in the sport, preparing and driving his cars in the early phase of his career.

Carolyn SwanPROFILE: CAROLYN SWAN 

Carolyn was born on September 14, 1969, and is the daughter of respected motor racing photographer, Roger Swan.  She was exposed to motor sport at a very early age and after years of watching racing with her father she entered sealed odometer rallies as a navigator in 1992.

She graduated to national rallies in 1994 and has been a co-driver ever since.  Today she is one of South Africa’s leading female co-drivers. She joined Team Total in 1998 and has been with the largest privateer Toyota team ever since.

Chirs BirkinPROFILE: CHRIS BIRKIN

Chris Birkin started his motor sport career in 1982 together with his brother Andrew by contesting regional rallies before graduating to national events. Between 1982 and 1992 the brothers won numerous regional championships and completed six Castrol Rallies.

In 1994 Chris moved to the South African Off Road Championship in class E and then class D with his brother. During a seven year stint in this discipline he won numerous class championships and achieved a number of podium finishes. Highlights were second places in twoToyota1000 Desert Races and two Roof of Africa events.

Duncan VosPROFILE: DUNCAN VOS

Duncan Vos was born in Barberton on the 30th November 1960. In his late teens he showed both a keen interest and the promise of real talent in motor sport.

That talent translated into success when Vos was crowned as South African Formula GTI champion in 1993. Following this success he moved on to saloon cars and the popular South African Touring Car series. In 1995 he won the Class B championship in this hotly contested series.

Toyota Motor Sport Elvene Coetzee

Elvene CoetzeeElvéne Coetzee has rallying in her genes. The Coetzee name is engrained in South African rally history with Elvéne’s father a driver of note in the 70s and 80s. Elvéne in fact lists her most memorable rally as the 2008 Belfast Rally as navigator for her father.

She began her rally career in regional championship events in 2006 as navigator to Johann van der Merwe in a Toyota Tazz. In just her fifth rally Elvéne navigated Johann to a win in the PMC Regional Rally.

Glyn HallPROFILE: GLYN HALL

Glyn Hall’s motor sport career started in the UK after he joined Chrysler UK as a student apprentice in 1975.  He progressed through many departments in the company during his training, but it was the competitions department headed up by Des O’Dell (who was on the design team for the iconic Ford GT 40) that captured his imagination the most.

He joined the competitions department on completion of his training and enjoyed what he describes as “three great years”. This period enabled him to meet many influential people in his life such as Tony Pond, Henri Toivonen and Jean Todt, to name but a few, as well as to be involved in the prototype Lotus Sunbeam rally car.

Johnny GemmelPROFILE: Johnny Gemmell

Johnny Gemmell was born in Kenya and grew up in Australia before settling in South Africa with his parents. He operates a plant hire business together with his family based on the East Rand.

Like many talented motor sportsmen Johnny Gemmell started his career in karting, but unlike most he opted to start in the top class in karting – 250cc Superkarts. That was in 1981. In 1982, just his second year of competition, he won the South African 250cc Superkart championship.

South Africa Motorsport: Atlas COPCO Team Taste Victory on RFS Magalies 400

Tarlton, Saturday – The Special Vehicle category turned into a race of firsts for the Atlas  Copco crew of Johan van Staden and Mike Lawrenson at the RFS Magalies 400, round one of the Absa Off Road Championship, which ended here today.

It was a maiden Class A victory for both van Staden and Lawrenson who were out in the Atlas Copco BAT Spec 5. For Lawrenson, the reigning Class P co-drivers champion, it was also his first race alongside van Staden and his second RFS Magalies 400 triumph.
