Top Gear Festival: GROENEWALD GRABS POINTS FROM BRUISING STREET-FIGHT

Sasol Racing Circuit Team went to the Top Gear Festival in Durban for round 5 of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship expecting a tough weekend and that is exactly what they got.  Hennie Groenewald pocketed a few points for 6th place in Saturday’s race, scant reward for SP Race Engineering’s hard work, but fortunately the team left with both cars intact, ready to fight again at Phakisa in early August.

The ground-breaking feat – dubbed the Deadly 720 – was the amazing finale to the first of four Top Gear Festival shows staged in front of a sell-out 15,000+ live audience at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, South Africa (15-16 June).

SA’s premier circuit racing, WesBank Super Series, at Top Gear Festival

South Africa’s premier motor racing show, the WesBank Super Series, is off to clear skies and sunny beaches for a street race at the Top Gear Festival in Durban between 16-17 June. The South African National Championship categories which will feature are the Bridgestone Production Cars, the Engen Volkswagen Cup and the SA Single Seaters (i.e Formula Volkswagen and Formula 1600). They will be accompanied by the Lotus Challenge, which is an invitational event.

Top Gear’s mystery racing driver The Stig was in Durban on 30th May, fine tuning his driving skills on South African soil ahead of the Top Gear Festival coming to town in June. After checking out the Moses Mabhida Stadium, where the gargantuan stadium show will take place, he took a drive round the local roads where Top Gear Festival’s first ever street circuit will be staged, and even took in a few local sites.

  • Deadly 720 is the World’s first double loop the loop stunt and will be attempted by the Top Gear Live Stunt Team during the Top Gear Festival staged in Durban, South Africa on 16-17 June.
  • The two loops are each 8 metres tall and comprise of 8 tons of steelwork (16 tons in total).

Hennie Groenewald and Richard Pinard are taking their Sasol-backed Subaru WRX STIs to the Top Gear Festival in Durban for round 5 of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship.  The popular holiday resort will host one 15 minute race on Saturday and one on Sunday, meaning only half points will be at stake for the coastal extravaganza – but with double the risk.
