The Mary Leakey Google Doodle

The Mary Leakey Google Doodle

Mary Leakey Google Doodle 6 February 2013

Mary Leakey

Today 6 February 2013 the Mary Leakey Google Doodle will get millions of people around the globe to focus their attention for a few minutes on the live and legacy of the archaeologist and anthropologist Mary Leakey who have discovered the remains of some of the first people on earth.

In a previous article from earlier today we have more detailed information about Marey Leakey, you can read the article about Mary Leakey for more information

At first when I visited the Google Homepage today, I were not sure about who Mary Leakey was and why Google have chosen to celebrate her life and legacy today. I did some research and found out that Mary Leakey was very famous for her archaeology work and that she have discovered the first fossilized Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans, and also discovered the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge.

Since the focus of today’s Google Doodle is on Mary Leakey and archeology and possibly the link between these ape men and the human race, you may find it interesting that a new skull have been recently discovered in South Africa, just outside Johannesburg nearly complete, it’s a fossilized skull of a 11-to-13-year-old boy from a new species of early Australopithecus hominid discovered in the Cradle of Humankind, outside Johannesburg South Africa. But the new find is perhaps most astonishing for its state of preservation. These skulls and skeletons are arguably the most complete hominid skeletons ever discovered, and I cannot help to think what Mary Leakey would have thought about this recent discovery.

The skull is approximately 1.9 million years old.

For more information about Mary Leakey we suggest that you visit the Wikipedia page about Mary Leakey, where you will find interesting information about where she was born, when she died and the various discoveries and work that she have done as a archaeologist and anthropologist.

About the Mary Leakey Google Doodle

Mary Leakey

If you look at the picture onto of Mary Leakey and you look at the Google Doodle of Mary Leakey it is easy to see the resemblance between the real Mary Leakey and the Cartoon Mary Leakey in the Google Doodle. The artistry and resemblance with Mary Leakey goes further than just a cartoon of the archeologist, in the doodle she is busy with excavations on a archeology site, and by just seeing the doodle without knowing anything of Mary Leakey one could have guessed that she was an archeologist. It rings true that an image is worth a thousand words, in the case of the Mary Leakey Google Doodle and one can make many assumptions just by looking at the doodle.

The dogs in the cartoon shows, that she was an animal lover, and it is said that she loved her Dalmatians who were always close to her on her excavations. In our opinion the doodler have done a magnificent job portraying the life and legacy of Mary Leakey within the doodle.
