The Robert Doisneau Google Doodle

Today the 14th April Google is celebrating the 100th Birthday of Robert Doisneau. If you are like me you have likely not heard of Robert Doisneau before google today decided to honor Robert Doisneau with a Google Doodle. Now for our favorite Google Doodle question.

Who was Robert Doisneau?

According to the Wikipedia Robert Doisneau entry, Robert_Doisneau were born on the 14th April 1912 and lived to 1 April 1994. He was a French Photographer, likely to be the first famous Street Photographer. He is also considered by many as one of the pioneers of Photojournalism. Photojournalism is when you use photos to tell a story. Like the well know saying: “a Picture is worth a thousand words”.

Robert Doisneau specialized in street photography. Robert Doisneau was known for his modest, playful, and ironic images of amusing juxtapositions, mingling social classes, and eccentrics in contemporary Paris streets and cafes. Influenced by the work of André Kertész, Eugène Atget, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, in over twenty books Doisneau presented a charming vision of human frailty and life as a series of quiet, incongruous moments

While working at Atelier Ullmann Doisneau had helped out as a camera assistant and developed into a staff photographer, but in 1931 he left both the studio and advertising, taking a job as an assistant with the modernist photographer André Vigneau

In 1934 he began working as an industrial advertising photographer for the Renault car factory at Boulogne-Billancourt. Working at Renault increased Doisneau’s interest in working with photography and people. In 1991 he admitted that the years at the Renault car factory marked “the beginning of his career as a photographer and the end of his youth.” Five years later, in 1939, he was fired for being constantly late.

He was forced to try freelance advertising, engraving and postcard photography to earn his living. At that time the French postcard industry was the largest in Europe, postcards served as greetings cards as well as vacation souvenirs

In 1950 he created his most recognizable work for Life – Le baiser de l’hôtel de ville (Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville), a photo of a couple kissing in the busy streets of Paris, which became an internationally recognised symbol of young love in Paris.

Robert Doisneau – Three Children in the Park

Robert Doisneau is probably best known for his famous The Kiss at the Hotel photo, but I like this  near surrealistic picture a lot, too. It dates from approx. 1971. These are the 4 Photos Google have used in their 14 April 2012 Google Doodle in honor of Robert Doisneau who would have celebrated his 100th Birthday today.

Since Robert Doisneau were famous for his Street Photography I wonder what he would have thought about the Google Maps Street View. Although it is not showing nearly as much art and creativity it allows people to view almost anyplace in the world in a 3D Virtual Tour. I am sure this is something that Robert Doisneau would have loved, to tell the story’s with photos accross the world!

Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower and Robert Doisneau

In 1881 Eiffel was contacted by Auguste Bartholdi who was in need of an engineer to help him to realise the Statue of Liberty. Some work had already been carried out by Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc, but he had died in 1879. Eiffel was selected because of his experience with wind stresses.

Eiffel devised a structure consisting of a four legged pylon to support the this copper sheeting which made up the body of the statue. The entire statue was erected at the Eiffel works in Paris before being dismantled and shipped to the United States from the researched we gatherd Robert Doisneau played an important role in both france and the United States history.

The Statue of Liberty Arrived in New York Harbor June 19, 1885 Here is a photograph that Robert Doisneau took of the eiffel tower with a statue of liberty (This must be a miniature version of the statue).
